Heart Health Month
February is American Heart Health Month! Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in the United States. Each year one in four people die due to heart disease. Isn’t it important to learn how to keep your heart in proper ticking order? (Yes I know I’m horrible with jokes:) I will be discussing the Mediterranean diet as well as some heart healthy Superfoods tomorrow at Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital. Yes, wine and chocolate are on the list.
Salmon a Heart Healthy Superfood should also not be missed. With its bounty of Omega 3 fatty acids this fish packs a 1,2 punch. The American Heart Association over the years has recommended to eat fish rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. Fish contain unsaturated fatty acids which when substituted for saturated fats found in red meat can help reduce your risk of heart disease.
Omega 3 fatty acids are a type of unsaturated fatty acid that may reduce inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation in the body can damage the blood vessels and lead to heart disease. These Super fatty acids may also lower triglycerides, lower blood pressure, decrease stroke and heart failure risk.
Consuming at least two servings a week of fish high in these fatty acids can help reduce your risk of heart disease.
Come to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital Conference room A and learn about how to give Heart Disease the 1,2 punch with Superfoods and proper nutrition. We will be performing a cooking demonstration, if you haven’t tried tabbouleh yet this might be your chance.
